6 Hiking Trails in and Around Den Bosch
In how many cities can you find a nature reserve that borders directly on the historic downtown? Exactly. Den Bosch is the place to be for beautiful walks. Here are some of our favorite walking routes in Den Bosch.
The Bossche Broek
Probably Den Bosch’s greatest and greenest source of pride: the Bossche Broek. Take a lovely stroll through this amazing nature reserve and enjoy the narrow roads, trails, and little bridges set amid the greenery. From Den Bosch, you can walk through this area to Vught or to the Zuiderplas. Want to impress your walking date or add a bit of adventure to your hike? Then don’t miss the “De Moerasdraak” ferry. This pedestrian ferry (you have to operate it yourself!) takes you across the Dommel River from Het Bossche Broek to Restaurant Buurt—or vice versa. NARROW MARGIN BELOW
Dommel Trail
When you say Den Bosch, you say De Dommel—especially if you love water. This beautiful, winding river flows right through the city center. Den Bosch marks the end of the 120-kilometer-long waterway, but it’s also the starting point of the Dommel Trail. Via the Dommelpad, you can hike over 120 kilometers along the banks of the Dommel to the river’s source in Peer, Belgium. Of course, you can always turn back earlier if you’d like.
Rail Zone
Want to discover a whole different side of Den Bosch? Right next to the historic center lies the city’s young, dynamic “little sister.” This walk takes you across the Paleisbrug and right through the Paleiskwartier, a modern neighborhood with a fresh market and great restaurants and bars. Still have energy to spare? Be sure to continue on toward the Tramkade: the creative and vibrant heart of the city.
For the true die-hards: The Pilgrimage Trail is a long-distance hiking trail consisting of two sections. Section 1 runs from Amsterdam to 's-Hertogenbosch and is 199 kilometers long. Part 2 is 267 kilometers long and runs from 's-Hertogenbosch to Wezet in Belgium. The trail is marked with white-and-red signs in both directions and is described in two guidebooks.
The name of this trail refers to the ancient pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, although this is more of an association than an actual reconstruction of a historical route from the Low Countries to that pilgrimage site. However, the route does pass by a number of (smaller) pilgrimage sites and other places of religious significance in Brabant and Limburg.
